Smart Slow Cooker Tips to Maximize Flavor and Cool

To make the most of your slow cooker strategy this season, consider these smart moves:

  • Think “Low and Slow.” Cooking on low minimizes heat spikes, preserves flavors, and maintains your comfort.
  • Prep ahead. Even the night before. Have everything ready so when morning comes, you can start cooking without heating the whole house. Dinner will be prepared without the midday sweat.
  • Resist lid-peeking. Heat escapes when you lift the lid, which extends your cooking time.  Trust the cooker.
  • Slow cooker linerseasy cleanup. Less scrubbing, more lounging.
  • Lean into energy savings.  Slow cookers use much less electricity than an oven or stovetop. Keeping your electric bill and the kitchen cooler.

Seasoning Pork:

  • In a small mixing bowl, mix paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.. Rub this dry mixture directly onto the meat on both sides.
  • Lightly spray the slow cooker pot with cooking spray, or use a slowcooker crock liner. Place the rough-cut sliced onions on the bottom of the slow cooker pot and gently place the seasoned pork on top of the onions.
  • Pour the 12 ounces of Dr Pepper over the top of the pork.. Set the slow cooker to low heat to cook for 8-9 hours or high heat for 4-5 hours.
  • This pork will be so tender that all you need are two forks to shred the meat with. Leave the pork in its juices. If your pork has too much juice, remove some to reduce the moisture, then add your favorite BBQ sauce, and stir. After adding the BBQ sauce, you can continue to cook the pork another 30-40 minutes if you wish, or simply add BBQ sauce and serve.

Serving Suggestions:

Crockpot roasted stuffed potatoes will keep the kitchen cool.

Slow cookers make mealtimes a breeze, and baked potatoes are my personal favorite. Wash six potatoes, prick them with a fork. First, rub with olive oil, then generously with salt and pepper. Then, let the slow cooker do its magic on High for 2.½ to 3 hours. Top them with leftover pork or chili from the night before and let everyone create their own loaded masterpiece. Easy, fun, and a meal that brings the whole family together.  Give sweet potatoes a try, you’ll love them.
