A Simple Creamy Spinach Dip That Has Stood the Test of Time

Spinach dip has remained a popular appetizer for years, and it is easy to understand why. It is simple to make, full of flavor, and pairs well with so many different foods.
This creamy spinach dip is served cold, requires no cooking, and uses easy-to-find ingredients. You can also prepare it ahead of time, which makes it especially convenient when you are entertaining. In fact, making it ahead of time is what makes it even better. Letting the dip chill gives the ingredients time to blend and develop even more flavor. Overnight is ideal if you have the time, but even a couple of hours in the refrigerator will make a difference.
Its great taste and versatility have helped spinach dip remain a favorite across generations. Sometimes the simplest recipes are the ones that stay in a family recipe collection for years—and I believe this is one of them.
What Makes This Creamy Spinach Dip So Good?

A good spinach dip has a lot to love. It is creamy, flavorful, and filled with ingredients that work beautifully together.
The spinach gives the dip its familiar flavor, while the creamy ingredients create the smooth texture everyone loves. Vegetable soup mix adds plenty of seasoning, and water chestnuts bring a little crunch to every bite.
Another reason I love this recipe is its simplicity. The ingredients are easy to find, the prep is quick, and you can make the dip ahead of time.
It is also one of those recipes you can serve in so many different ways. Whether you are putting together a large appetizer table or simply looking for something to enjoy with a few crackers, this creamy spinach dip is always a delicious choice.
More Than Just a Dip

One of the best things about spinach dip is deciding what to serve with it!

My personal favorite cracker to serve with this dip is Wheat Thins. I love the extra crunch they add to the creamy spinach dip.
Another serving option I enjoy is using a bread bowl. It makes a beautiful presentation when entertaining, and it requires very little cleanup. When everyone goes home, you can refrigerate any leftover dip and bread bowl and enjoy it yourself the next day!
Try It on a Baked Potato!
As I mentioned earlier, it wasn’t until I started writing this post that I remembered another way I have enjoyed this dip.
Years ago, I occasionally used leftover spinach dip as a topping for baked potatoes. A hot baked potato topped with cool, creamy spinach dip creates a surprisingly delicious combination.
It may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of baked potato toppings, but don’t be afraid to try it. You might discover a new favorite way to enjoy this classic dip!
Tips for Making the Best Creamy Spinach Dip
A few simple steps can help ensure your spinach dip turns out delicious every time.
- Remove excess moisture from the spinach. Too much water can make the dip thin and watery.
- Mix the ingredients thoroughly. I like to mix the dry and wet ingredients until well blended before adding the spinach.
- Give it time to chill. Refrigerate the dip for at least two hours before serving. Overnight is even better if you have the time.
- Taste before serving. If the dip needs a little adjustment, now is the perfect time to make it.
- Keep it chilled. This is especially important when serving spinach dip at outdoor gatherings during the warmer months. A chilled serving bowl can help.
Creamy Spinach Dip Recipe
If you are looking for an easy appetizer loved for generations and requiring little effort, this creamy spinach dip is one recipe worth keeping close at hand.
Creamy Spinach Dip
Equipment
- 1 spatula
Ingredients
- 1 12 oz bag of chopped spinach
- 1 16 oz container sour cream
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 pkg Knorr Vegetable Recipe Mix
- 1 8 oz water chestnuts, diced
- 3 green onions (chopped)
Instructions
- Spinach Prep: Thaw the frozen spinach. Once thawed, wring out the water with paper towels. I like to thaw the frozen spinach in the refrigerator overnight.
- Assembly: In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, Knorr vegetable mix, diced water chestnuts, and chopped green onions. Mix until everything is well combined. Then add the spinach and mix again until combined. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Overnight is best.
- Serve: Remove spinach dip from the refrigerator and place it in the serving bowl you plan to use. I like to place the bowl in the center of a serving platter and surround it with veggies, crackers, sliced bread, and chips. To serve in a bread bowl, begin by preparing a sourdough bread round. Slice off the top and hollow out the inside, tearing the bread into bite-sized pieces. Spoon spinach dip into the bread bowl. Place the bread bowl on a serving platter and arrange the torn bread pieces around it.
- Make Ahead: Let flavors develop for up to 24 hours. Mix thoroughly again before placing in a serving bowl. Wait to fill a bread bowl until right before serving.
- Storage: This dip will stay fresh in the fridge for about 4 days when stored in an airtight glass container. The bread bowl should be eaten within a day; otherwise, it will become soggy if stored in the fridge for too long
- Freezing: Do not freeze this dip, as it contains a high amount of sour cream, which can alter its texture when frozen.

Conclusion — A Long-Overdue Addition to My Recipe Collection
As I was writing this post, my thoughts carried me back to the first time I introduced this spinach dip at a gathering of family and friends. I can still remember the people who quickly said, “Oh no, thank you. I hate spinach!”
Then, after a little coaxing from someone else who also claimed to hate spinach but decided to give it a try, he stepped up to the table—and fell in love with it.
By the next gathering, those same spinach skeptics were asking, “Lead me to where the spinach dip is!”
