Mix the first 4 ingredients in a boiler and bring to a boil on the stovetop. Let it cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Set aside.
Whisk together, blending well the flour, sugar, box of chocolate pudding mix, baking soda, and salt.
Pour the contents of the boiler into the dry ingredients. Using a hand mixer, mix thoroughly.
Add the eggs, the buttermilk, and the vanilla to the batter. Using a hand mixer, mix thoroughly. Do not overmix.
Pour the batter into a greased and lightly floured bundt cake pan.
Bake in a 350-degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a cake tester/toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan on a cooling rack for 10 minutes, then invert on a cooling rack. Allow the cake to cool before frosting.
Frosting
In a medium mixing bowl add 2 cups of powdered (confectioner's sugar). Set aside.
In a boiler, add the butter and cocoa. Heat on the stovetop, whisking until well blended., Pour the warm cocoa butter mixture over the confectioner's sugar. With a hand mixer, mix thoroughly. Add the buttermilk and the vanilla. Mix until smooth and creamy. Pour the frosting over a slightly warm cake, smoothing over the top and the sides with a spatula.
Slice and serve. Cake can be served as is, or it is also fantastic with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
